Fried rice is one of those shape-shifting dishes that can serve as a side dish to meat or veggies or stand alone as an entree. It can be made with just veggies, with a single meat, or with a combination of pork, chicken, shrimp, and even beef.

It is incredibly versatile, and if you’ve made it or ordered it out and you have some leftover, you’re likely excited at the prospect of enjoying the dish again.

You can reheat fried rice. The real question is how to do it right, so you don’t end up with a dried up or mushy rice dish.  

No one wants that, and sadly, it can happen.  

Finding the right appliance for your dish is everything.  

For example, with fried or breaded foods, it is often better to reheat them in an air fryer or in the oven. In contrast, foods that have been baked or grilled often reheat better back in the oven or on the grill.  

For fried rice, we are probably going to reheat it best back on the stovetop in a wok or frying pan, but let’s work through all of our appliances to be sure.

Before we get into all that, though, it’s important to give the matter of food safety its due.

By all accounts, yes. You can and should reheat fried rice, and you will be perfectly safe doing so as long as you follow a few basic guidelines.  

In general, the USDA advises reheating all leftover dishes to an internal temperature of 165 degrees Fahrenheit.  

But of course, you should do your own research to be sure you are watching out for your own safety.

How to Reheat Fried Rice in the Oven 

Reheating fried rice in the oven is an easy way to kind of “set it and forget it.” It will give you some time to do other things and prepare other dishes if needed.  

  1. Preheat the oven to 425 degrees Fahrenheit and place your fried rice in an oven-safe container with a lid. 
  2. Sprinkle about 2 tablespoons of broth over your rice and place the lid on the container to trap in the moisture.  
  3. Place the rice in the oven and allow it to heat for 15 minutes.  
  4. Check rice for the internal temperature of 165 degrees Fahrenheit and return the rice to the oven for another 5 minutes if necessary.  
  5. Enjoy! 

How to Reheat Fried Rice in the Microwave 

Reheating fried rice in the microwave is fast and easy, but it can result in dried out or mushy rice, so follow these instructions carefully.  

  1. Place your fried rice in a microwave-safe dish and sprinkle 2 tablespoons of broth over the rice.  
  2. Cover the dish with a damp paper towel to lock in extra moisture.  
  3. Heat the rice in the microwave on full power for 2 minutes. Remove the dish from the microwave and stir the rice to make it fluffy.  
  4. Place the rice back in the microwave and cook at full power for another minute. Your rice should have now reached the proper internal temperature.

How to Reheat Fried Rice in an Air Fryer 

If you’ve got an air fryer, fried rice can be an interesting food to reheat in this appliance.  

Reheating fried rice in an air fryer can get you crispy rice without the mush you might get in the microwave.  

  1. Place your fried rice in a baking dish and place the dish inside your air fryer.  
  2. Reheat the rice for 6 minutes at 400 degrees Fahrenheit.  
  3. Stir the rice to fluff it and return to the air fryer for another 2 minutes.

How to Reheat Fried Rice on a Grill 

I would not advise trying to reheat fried rice on a grill unless it is the only option you have or you are already outside and don’t want to be bothered going inside to heat up rice.  

If either of these is the case, your best bet is to place your rice in a cast iron skillet and treat your grill like a gas-powered stovetop.  

  1. Add a bit of olive oil to the cast iron skillet and place the skillet over a steady flame.  
  2. Once the oil is hot, add the rice and toss for a few minutes to get it thoroughly heated.

How to Reheat Fried Rice in a Toaster Oven 

The toaster oven is the little sister of the conventional oven and can be utilized when necessary to reheat your fried rice.  

You will follow similar steps as those for the oven, but it may take a bit longer as the toaster oven is less powerful.  

  1. Preheat your toaster oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit and place your fried rice in a baking dish with a lid.  
  2. Pour 2 tablespoons of broth evenly over rice and place the lid or aluminum foil over the top.  
  3. Cook the rice in the toaster over for 20 minutes then check the internal temperature.  
  4. You can always return it to the toaster oven for about 5 minutes more if necessary.

Finally, reheating fried rice on the stove is the best way to get your dish into tip top shape quickly.
