So, if you’ve cooked yourself up a batch of mussels, you’re probably wondering how to reheat them, so they don’t go horribly wrong.

Don’t worry. I’ve got your answers.

Right, so, how do we get them to not go horribly wrong? After all, the microwave can turn them to rubber. The oven can make them tough. The grill can scorch them.

Mussels are bound to be a bit chewy, but we don’t want to have to gnaw on them.

In short, yes, you can reheat mussels. In truth, you can reheat pretty much any food that has been refrigerated or frozen. It’s simply a matter of using the correct appliance in the right way with the food you choose.

For example, foods that have been breaded and fried are often best reheated in the oven or in an air fryer. Foods that have been baked or grilled are typically best reheated back in the oven or back on the grill.

With mussels, we are probably going to get the best reheating results using steam on the stovetop, but let’s run through each appliance to cover all our bases.

Before we get started, if you’re worried about food safety, you’re not alone.

Especially since we’re dealing with seafood, you want to be sure you get rid of any potential toxins when reheating your mussels.

The general guidelines tell us to reheat all leftovers to 165 degrees Fahrenheit.

But of course, you should always do your own research. To get you started on that research, check out this article on reheating leftovers by Healthline.

How to Reheat Mussels in the Oven

Reheating mussels in the oven is a bit tricky, but it’s not impossible.

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
  2. Pull the mussel meat from the shells and put the meat in a baking dish. Pour some seafood or chicken broth over the meat and heat for 15 minutes.
  3. Check to see that the mussels are heated through and enjoy!

How to Reheat Mussels in the Microwave

Reheating mussels in the microwave calls for an abundance of caution. You don’t want them to end up rubbery!

  1. Pull the meat from the shells and place them in a microwave-safe bowl and pour broth over the mussels.
  2. Heat the mussels on full power in 10-second increments until they are heated through.
  3. It should not take longer than 30 seconds but be sure to check the internal temperature.
  4. Serve in broth or on toast and enjoy!

How to Reheat Mussels in an Air Fryer

Reheating mussels in an air fryer is actually really easy and can be a great approach.

  1. Preheat the air fryer to 390 degrees Fahrenheit.
  2. Place the mussels in their shells, spread out so they’re not touching.
  3. Heat the mussels for about 3 minutes and check the internal temperature.
  4. While the mussels are heating, melt some butter on the stove and toast some baguette slices.
  5. Serve your mussels on toast with melted butter and enjoy!

How to Reheat Mussels on a Grill

The last thing I’m going to do is send you rushing out to the grill to heat up some mussels, but if you happen to be outside at your grill, with it fully fired up, chatting with friends, you can absolutely throw your leftover mussels on the grill for a few minutes.

  1. Place a cast iron skillet over an open flame and pour some broth into the skillet, so it comes up at least halfway up the side of the skillet.
  2. Place your mussels in their shells into the broth and keep the flame going.
  3. Once the broth comes to a rolling boil, your mussels will be ready.
  4. Serve and enjoy!

How to Reheat Mussels in a Toaster Oven

Okay, this one might seem kind of silly, but the truth is the toaster oven is just a smaller, faster, hotter version of a conventional oven.

If you’ve only got the toaster oven to work with, we can make it work!

  1. Preheat the toaster oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit.
  2. Pull the meat from the mussels and place them, spread out, on a shallow baking sheet.
  3. Pour broth over the mussels so they’re almost submerged.
  4. Heat for 10 minutes and check the internal temperature of the mussels.
  5. Serve and enjoy!

How to Reheat Mussels in a Pan on the Stove

The stovetop can be an excellent way to reheat mussels. You actually have a few options.

You can make a seafood stew, you can make a paella, or you can saute the mussels in butter or broth. Or, you could just steam them.

  1. To steam your mussels, fill a large stock pot with water and bring it to a boil on the stovetop.
  2. Place a steamer basket in the pot and place the mussels in their shells in the steamer basket.
  3. Heat for a few minutes until the mussels are heated through.
  4. Serve and enjoy!

Winner! – The Best Way to Reheat Mussels Is Using the Stovetop

You can do so much with mussels! If your goal is to reheat mussels to their exact original state, the best way to get there is using the stovetop to steam them.

After the stovetop, of course, is the air fryer, which can heat the seafood all the way through without altering their state.

Every other approach you take will somehow change the mussels, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. A great seafood stew or a delicious rice dish like paella, or even buttery mussels on toast, can be excellent as a meal or a snack.
